    Have you tried to add thickness to the features? Would be nice to be able to stack them on top of each other at the rifting zones so they form canyons after separating. Not sure if the 3d scalar fields in GPlates, qgis, or blender would be best for this. Thank you.

    The most expected video for me, since Csa is my fab climate. Loving the series. I was really excited to apply it to my map, but I have ended up with a ton of Csb area, which I don’t think makes any sense since Mediterranean climates are supposed to be rare. I think I must have messed up bigly on the wind and precipitation maps. Has anyone else also ended up with too much Medit area? Kind regards

    4:53 What I did was I sort of made a map of total rainfall by combining summer and winter, and took the areas with the right temperatures and the highest rainfall value (which could only be attained by having high rainfall in both seasons), it was much easier to work with

    My world is kinda interesting... I'm working with a supercontinent with a very large amount of land in the southern midlatitudes and an almost-separate northern lobe reaching up to the pole. I got an ice sheet up there, but not a super large or high one, only about 2km max height.

    Okay guys, I need HELP! So not to long ago I was inspired to start my own world building adventure. On account that all of us, myself included, are watching this video it will not surprise anyone to know that I wanted to do things the artefaxian way but that was a massive task I was undertaking due to a few problems namely: 1. I do not use a Mac 2. I am not subscribed to the Adobe suite of apps I need someone to help Windows users on a budget like me. I tried GIMP once and it was awful so no GIMP for now. And also no 'switch to Mac/Apple' argument either.If anyone knows how to aid this horrendous situation PLZ REPLY!!!!

    1: It might be a little late for this, but when I'm making maps I separate the temperature isotherms into their own individual layers (so 0-6 would get it's own layer, and 6-12 would have it's own layer, and so on for all the isotherms). that way you can use the same layer selection trick that you showed in this video to quickly select the exact temperatures you want and makes sure you don't forget any small areas. 2: One critique that I have is that Cwa climates seem far too widely spread. On earth Cw climates are uncommon outside areas that experience monsoons. Cf climates seem to be the default unless there's a specific mechanism at play (monsoons or mountains cutting off rainfall in the winter). this might be a result of you only having three stops on the precipitation map. Cf climates can have a noticeable decrease in rain during the winter, they might get just barely enough rain to avoid being arid in the winter.

    Shouldn't there be a thing Cfa transition zone between that Csa and Cwa? It seems to happen in northern Pakistan, in South Africa, though arguably not on the west coast of both North and South America but the Andes and Sierra Madre play weird tricks on climate I guess? Instinctively it feels like switching from summer dry to winter dry is not possible (also I think I'd struggled with that for continental climates in the past). (Also, hello from a nice and warm Csa climate - though we've been getting plenty of rain lately, it's good for my plants, but you know, otherwise it's a dry heat. I do like it better than when I was living in Scotland ngl. Granted as I've read many times and can confirm: the wettest season in most of the Mediterranean is actually spring and autumn, blame the storms).

    I do have some nitpicks with this spreadsheet, namely that the spectral type seems to be solely dependent on mass and age is almost irrelevant. Putting in the mass and age for a sun-like star such as Rigel Kentaurus, which should be classed as a G2V same as Sol, it comes out as an F star. Clearly there's some more fine-tuning that needs to be done.

    Sidenote: After a bunch of time trying to look in close, figure out which climate is where using the key on the right (something quite hard, given the fidelity and similarly of the different temperate zones), what could be useful at the end is just a bunch of breakdown maps, only showing the different areas of one climate zone... Or going by rows (Af, Bwh, Csa, Cwa, Cfa etc.) or sets (So maybe one for all the tropicals, all the arids, all meds, etc...), just so it's much clearer/ easier to work out what a certain small bit of land is, etc. Especially given how the Cw's, Cf's and Csb are all very similar in colour.

    For worldbuilders that want pre-industrial tech levels for their world, your Cfa climates can only host advanced civilisations as macro climates with riziculture. It doesn't mean rice should be their food staple, but it should be at least one of the staple crops amongst maybe two others. As microclimates in pre-industrial agricultural society, they tend to be death traps. Death traps with a lot of food, as well as plenty of stuff one can make textiles out of. This abundance of ressources gather enough people to run the group before their untimely death. In pre-industrial societies, high money, good access to food and high social status didn't always equal healthier children, mostly because of social factors such as breast feeding by the mother vs breastfeeding by a nursemaid, traditional attitudes of parents and so forth. It has been debunked several times by the majority of historians.

    • @rossbaygeo
      @rossbaygeo 2 дні тому

      I don't believe these assertions are supported in research. We shouldn't generalize particularities about cultures that had specific contexts in certain periods of history, or mistake contingent developments over time with inevitable ones determined by the environment.

    • @Lilas.Duveteux
      @Lilas.Duveteux 2 дні тому

      @@rossbaygeo There's one study about some Missisippi Amerindian population being civilised, yet very sickly. So it's possible, but the populations won't be healthy nor independant.

    • @rossbaygeo
      @rossbaygeo День тому

      @@Lilas.Duveteux Within the sciences, one study does not make a consensus. It is also important to keep in mind that prior to very recent developments in hygiene, diet, and allopathic medicine that sedentary peoples globally, especially the lower classes and those urban or dense societies, were commonly malnourished and inflicted with a variety of diseases regardless of their climate.

    • @Lilas.Duveteux
      @Lilas.Duveteux День тому

      @@rossbaygeo I am aware of that, but...Some climates were worst than others for diseases, such as some micro-climactic regions being entirely dependent on immigration to stay humanly populated, because despite enourmous fertility due to having plenty of food, the mortality was just this high. This is the level of "not suitable for human habitation" I'm talking about.

    Looking through, that big inland-ish sea to the West of Janar could very much be a super Med compared to our one. The climate we know and love on the inner shore, with temperate climates on the mainland shore and outer side of the island. Very nice. WHat's more I can easily see early colonisation sailing west onto Ezri, following the long thin temperate coastal strip. The west coast of Ezri also has a nice california style thing going on with a very nice big chunk of Cwa and Cwb (hello northern Portugal!) Picard seems bereft of med style climates, but the eastern bay on the peninsular is a great wide arc of temperate that again jumps across an island arc to a very nice bit of Ezri. -I admit, it's a bit of a struggle reading/ deciphering all those additional shades of green on the differing continents. But hopefully once the climate stuff is done we'll get a fancy new map with a handy key. Great work.

    I live in a Csa climate area. And I can attest to nice, beautiful summer days, when it's not a heatwave. That being said, didn't you say in an older video that Csx zones are 'Cradle of Civilisation' territory or something?

      Yeah, they can be. The idea is that plants tend to be quite hardy in mediterranean zones and so, if domesticable, they take well to being stored.

      There is a decent amount of bias here because the cultures of the Mediterranean world and West Asia were very influential for contemporary European and settler societies, but complex cultures have emerged in every climate zone except for E.

    Are there any possible koppen climates that do not exist on Earth, or have we lost any to climate change? CFB is my favorite because they can produce breathtaking forests and I enjoy hiking the most when its 16C and misting. The cedar/hemlock groves of Cascadia are my favorites especially, but I haven't found a place that grows hemlock trees that I really dislike.

      Every zone exists, but there could well be ways to make rare zones like As, Cxc, and Dsx, much more common than in our world. Cascadia is mostly Csb, not Cfb. The Cfb zone I "live" in is empty fields as far as the eye can see.

      Exoplanets will almost certainly have climate zones that aren't in the Köppen system. I don't know whether or not the Earth has lost any climate zones types.

      The Köppen Climate classification was made with modern Earth in mind so I think that question is kinda a yes by default. But you could see exotic, unusual climates in a setting more like the Ice Age or Carboniferous Earth. In a world much warmer that ours, you could indeed imagine a highly continental C_A zone where you have 0-5°C winters and dangerous 40+°C summers, something our world might see for real unless net zero emissions happens within a generation. In a world with even modestly high eccentricity, you might have worldwide orbital seasons which might combine or not with axial tilt seasons. You could also see different air density or spin speed affecting the temperature swings of the day or how many Hadley cells there are, or dense rings shading and cooling large chunks of the planet. Figuring out how this stuff works out is probably extremely hard and speculative though, even figuring out why the Earth's precession made the Sahara a Savanna when the ice age ended is still something I think climatologists haven't really finished yet.

    C(x)c climates aren’t always windswept grasslands! Naturally, they usually harbor immense forests (see Scotland, Alaska, Iceland, and Chile’s rainforests in those zones). It’s just that mass deforestation is a very common result of human habitation in those areas since the cold weather and short growing seasons leads humans to log even more profusely than normal for fuel, building materials, and to make room for livestock. Those areas *naturally* should be dominated by great and ancient rainforests.

      Buenos Aires is naturally a grassland, with nothing more than a few bushes and lonely trees. Pretty much the only forests there are here are man made (the only natural forest is on the river plate delta, but that’s just a very small area compared to the rest of the region)

      @@mvalthegamer2450 yes, Iceland had forest before human settlement. But again, not immense forest. Iceland was around 25% forested around the time of settlement in the 9th century. Even prior to the deforestation brought by Scandinavian settlers, the majority of the island was not covered by woodland.
